SZA Sets The Record Straight On Her Past Relationship With Drake
In an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone, SZA delves into her brief but memorable relationship with the renowned rapper, Drake. The singer-songwriter, 33, reminisces about her youthful fling with Drake, who was 36 at the time.
“We were really young. It wasn’t hot and heavy or anything. It was like youth vibes. It was so childish,” he shared.
Drake had previously spilled the beans about his “situationship” with the talented R&B sensation in his 2020 track “Mr. Right Now,” featuring 21 Savage and Metro Boomin.
In the song, he rapped, “Yeah, said she wanna f— to some SZA, wait / ‘Cause I used to date SZA back in ’08. If you cool with it, baby, she can still play / While I jump inside that box and have a field day.”
Setting the record straight, SZA took to social media to clarify that they were romantically involved but emphasized that nothing inappropriate took place, as she had turned 18 in November 2008.
“So It was actually 2009 lol … in this case, a year of poetic rap license mattered lol,” the Kill Bill singer wrote in a tweet on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I think he just innocently rhymed 08 w wait. Anybody who really knows me and was around during this time can confirm … it’s all love, all peace.”
SZA reassured her fans in a separate post, “I just didn’t want anybody thinking anything underage or creepy was happening. Completely innocent. Lifetimes ago.”
Despite their brief romance, SZA and Drake have remained on good terms. Drake even complimented her, referring to her as “the chef’s kiss” on his Instagram Story after the release of her hit song Hit Different in 2020.
Recently, the dynamic duo joined forces for their first-ever collaboration, Slime You Out, featured on Drake’s upcoming album, For All the Dogs. The song debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking SZA’s second track to achieve this milestone following Kill Bill earlier this year.
In her candid interview with Rolling Stone, SZA also opened up about how her perspective on love has evolved over the years, including a five-year engagement to an unnamed ex-boyfriend.
“I feel like I have more to offer than the way I look and my energy, but it’s like, I’m human, that s— is all-encompassing,” she wrote, expressing her desire for her future partner to appreciate her for who she truly is and emphasizing her personal growth.
