Taylor Swift Backs Kamala Harris For 2024 Presidential Race, Encourages Fans To Get Informed
Taylor Swift has officially voiced her support for vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, taking to Instagram to share her decision. The Grammy-winning artist posted a photo of herself holding her beloved cat and emphasized the importance of doing research before casting a vote.
“Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight,” Taylor, 34, wrote, referencing Harris’ first debate with her opponent, former president Donald Trump. She encouraged her followers to look into the issues and understand where the candidates stand on topics that matter most. “As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country,” she added.
Taylor addressed recent fake A.I. images that falsely showed her endorsing Trump, images Trump himself shared on his Truth Social account. Taylor pointed out the dangers of misinformation and the importance of transparency in this election. “It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth,” she shared.
In a clear and direct message, she revealed her support for Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota. “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” she declared.
She went on to praise Harris for championing causes she believes need strong leadership, including LGBTQ+ rights and women’s reproductive health. Taylor admired Harris for being “a steady-handed, gifted leader” and said she felt the country could achieve more with calm leadership instead of chaos.
The Shake It Off singer concluded her message by encouraging first-time voters to ensure they’re registered and recommended voting early to avoid any last-minute rush. She also humorously signed off as “Childless Cat Lady,” a playful nod to comments made by Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, in 2021.
Harris’ running mate, Walz, reacted live on MSNBC, expressing gratitude for Taylor’s endorsement. “I am incredibly grateful, first of all, to Taylor Swift. I say that also as a cat owner — a fellow cat owner,” Walz quipped. He praised her statement as “eloquent and clear,” emphasizing the need for courage like Taylor’s in standing up for what matters.
Swifties, as her fans are known, were also called to action. Walz encouraged them to visit Harris’ campaign website and lend their support. “This will be the opportunity, Swifties — KamalaHarris.com — get on over there, give us a hand, get things going,” he added.
Swift’s political involvement has been steadily growing. In the 2020 election, she endorsed President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, marking her first public political endorsement. That year, she graced the cover of V Magazine’s Thought Leaders issue, urging her followers to vote for Biden.
Her political awakening, documented in the Netflix film Miss Americana, showed her tearful push to publicly express her views, despite reservations from some members of her team. Since then, she’s used her platform to encourage voter turnout, even slamming then-President Trump for obstructing mail-in voting ahead of the 2020 election.
In 2023, Swift’s Instagram post on National Voter Registration Day resulted in 35,000 new voters signing up. She has continually encouraged her fans to get involved in local elections as well, particularly in her home city of Nashville.
