Tom Hopper Says “Umbrella Academy” Cast Still Feels Like “Family” After Finale

Tom Hopper says saving the world might have ended for The Umbrella Academy but the family bond it created is still very much alive. The 40-year-old actor, who played Luther Hargreeves on the hit Netflix series, told PEOPLE on August 4 that he and his castmates continue to stay close even a year after the show’s finale. 

“I just saw David Castañeda a few days ago. Yeah, we went and met up for steak in Manhattan here,” Tom shared at the New York City premiere of The Terminal List: Dark Wolf. “I text Robert Sheehan all the time. I’m always in touch with Emmy [Raver-Lampman]. We had something special on that show.”

That show, of course, is The Umbrella Academy, which wrapped up in August 2024 after four seasons of time-traveling chaos, dysfunctional sibling drama, and world-saving missions. Based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s comic book series, the cast, Tom, David, Robert, Emmy, Elliot Page, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, and Ritu Arya became more than just a team of superheroes.

For Emmy, the six-plus years of filming left her with a chosen family. “…We’ve really become a family in real life. I think that’s the beautiful thing to walk away from this experience with, is that I have friends for life,” she told PEOPLE at the final season premiere. Aidan echoed the sentiment, calling the whole journey “an absolute joy.”

Even though the cameras stopped rolling in 2023, the group has made an effort to stay connected across continents. “We’ve got people in London and Ireland and New York and L.A. and Seattle,” Emmy said. “I think it’s going to be a little bit more work, but it’s worth it because we are family.”

Tom says he feels lucky to have experienced that kind of chemistry more than once. Joining The Terminal List: Dark Wolf has reminded him of the same magic. “I feel like I’ve got another family of people that I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I’m so lucky to have this.’”
