Tori Spelling Informs Dean McDermott Of Divorce Filing In Podcast
Tori Spelling, known for her role in Beverly Hills, 90210, stunned fans when she revealed on her debut podcast, misSPELLING, that she had filed for divorce from her husband of 18 years, Dean McDermott. The 50-year-old actress poured her heart out, admitting she felt like she was hit in the gut by the finality of the decision.
“I don’t know what feels more like a punch in the stomach: that it’s out there and it’s final, or that I have to call him right now,” she said.
She then called Dean, 57, but he didn’t answer, prompting her to leave a voicemail.
During the podcast, Tori explained the unusual protocol of having to inform her ex-husband about the divorce after filing.
“There’s this weird thing that I didn’t know about before. That you have to be careful with your ex, like it’s he said, she said, who filed first, so I had to file and go through the process and then once it was accepted and publicly posted, then I’m allowed to call and fill in my ex,” she stated.
Tori also shared her apprehension about confronting Dean, confessing she despised confrontation. However, she eventually reached him, breaking the news while he was at work.
Listeners could hear Tori’s side of the conversation, where she reassured Dean that the filing was just a formality and expressed her feelings about being the one to file first.
“I hate to do this to you while you’re at work. They’ve done it. It’s just the formality, it’s just a one-sheet you check off and next you’ll have to sign it,” she told him.
When Dean questioned her decision to file for the divorce first, Tori referenced his interview with the Daily Mail, where he openly discussed issues in their marriage, as part of her reasoning for filing first. She felt justified in her decision, considering the private matters Dean had already disclosed publicly.
“You said everything you’ve done to me over the years, so I think it would make perfect sense that… I would follow. Cause those are things I never would have divulged to anybody and you did,” she said to him, adding, “It’s just a one sheet where you check divorce and irreconcilable differences. OK, I love you. OK. Bye.”
Following the podcast’s release, Dean shared his perspective in a video obtained by the Daily Mail, indicating that despite the split, they were on good terms.
The divorce documents, obtained by PEOPLE, cited irreconcilable differences as the reason behind the split. Tori requested spousal support and sole physical custody of their five children, with joint legal custody.
Dean, on the other hand, announced the separation on social media, saying, “It’s with great sadness and a very very heavy heart that after 18 years together and 5 amazing children, that @torispelling and I have decided to go our separate ways, and start a new journey of our own.”
