Will There Be a Sister Act 3? Whoopi Goldberg Teases Fans With Possible Sequel After Visiting the Pope
Whoopi Goldberg recently shared that she enjoyed meeting Pope Francis in the Vatican. She also hinted that the religious enclave might be the location of the third installment of her hit movie Sister Act.
One of Whoopi’s iconic roles was of Sister Mary Clarence/Deloris Van Cartier from Sister Act 1 and 2. The funny and lighthearted storyline combined with the catchy songs led the first film to earn over $230 million.
Thirty years since the last Sister Act movie was released, its lead star flew to Italy to meet the head of the Catholic Church. Fans are abuzz that a long-awaited sequel may be in the works.
The 67-year-old actress’ meet-and-greet with the Pope comes after being slammed over a year ago for her comments against San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone. Back then, she called out the church leader, asking him to deny Nancy Pelosi the Holy Communion because of her pro-choice stance.
Whoopi’s meeting with the Pope went well. She described the experience as remarkable on her Instagram account. She even asked her 1.3 million followers to imagine Sister Act with all the nuns standing and waiting for the Pope to come out as she uploaded a pictured of herself standing in front of St. Peter’s Square.
The American actress further teased the public by writing, “Maybe that’s going to happen in the movie – you never know. But we are in Rome, and we are in Vatican City.”
Whoopi waited 11 years to meet Pope Francis. When the opportunity finally came, she made sure to document her Vatican trip with videos. The first clip shows her in her hotel preparing for her day out.
She captioned the video with, “Good morning! So, we are in Rome at a fabulous hotel and on our way over to Vatican City.” She further teased her followers by asking them why they think she’s going there and that they’ll soon find out.
The following clip shows the actress waiting in the back of a car where Whoopi explained, “So we’re sitting in the car waiting for folks to check us out, but this is very exciting. I’m not really saying what we’re doing yet because I want to savor this experience. As I mentioned, we’re on our way to the Vatican and close by.”
Whoopi later mentioned that she had had the most exquisite experience, promising that she would share more details later. In the meantime, she would be getting in a Vatican car because she’s headed to see something that her followers can see after she gets back.
The next Instagram Story from Whoopi showed her standing in St. Peter’s Square.
Note that Pope Francis met Whoopi for an ongoing exhibition entitled Changes which focuses on the dramatic effects of climate change.
Although there has yet to be an official confirmation whether Sister Act 3 will happen, Tim Federle is speculated to be ready to direct while Madhuri Shekar is writing the script.
