YouTuber Grace Helbig Shares Breast Cancer Diagnosis
Helbig shared the news of her shocking diagnosis with her fans in an eight-minute YouTube video that she started with the words, “So I do not know how to do this, so we’re just going to do this: I have breast cancer.”
The video was posted on July 3, and the YouTuber went on to explain that what she has is triple-positive breast cancer. Doctors, medical professionals, and people who know anything about cancer have assured her that it is “super treatable” and “highly beatable”. According to the American Cancer Society, triple-positive tumors mean- HER2-positive, ER-positive, and PR-positive.
The 37-year-old told her fans that doctors believe that the cancer is in stage 2A, but they were not entirely sure. She also assured her fans that they were going for the cure and not remission, which is encouraging, exciting, helpful, and good.
She admitted that the news is shocking and surreal. She told her fans that she had a lot of time to process the news and was finally ready to share it with them.
The YouTube star has around 2.6 million subscribers on YouTube and is known to make “quirky” and “comedic” videos.
Grace was diagnosed about a month ago after discovering a lump in her breast, which she mentioned to her gynecologist during her yearly women’s exam.
She said, “I had sort of noticed a weird lump in my left breast but I really had to talk myself into bringing it up to her in the appointment because I thought that I was just a stupid little girl that didn’t know how girl bodies worked, and it’s probably just muscle tissue. Thank God I listened to that little voice inside of me that finally got the courage to bring it up to her.”
The influencer said that the doctor found her lump to be abnormal and gave her a list of surgical physicians. She visited them and went through a mammogram, an ultrasound, and a biopsy to confirm her diagnosis.
She encouraged her fans to get their “lumps checked” and not be afraid to ask their doctors what they might think is a stupid question.
She explained that her treatment plan would consist of six rounds of chemotherapy, followed by surgery and then hormonal therapy. She also said that the port had already been inserted in her arm the day before for chemotherapy.
“I even got my port placement in my arm yesterday which is basically like a little Nano Pet-looking device that they embed in the skin under your arm so that when you start chemo, you can just be hooked up to the machine, like a little Roomba and a charging station. So, cute. Which obviously made this process much more real, which made me much more eager to tell you.”
After breaking the news, the influencer received a lot of love and support from her family, friends, and subscribers.
