Brooke Shields Wants Her Daughters To Embrace Aging With Confidence
Brooke Shields is embracing aging with grace — and she’s making sure her daughters, 18-year-old Grier and Rowan 21-year-old, grow up with the same confidence. In a recent interview with Real Simple, the 59-year-old actress shared her thoughts on beauty, aging, and the pressures of growing up in a world obsessed with youth.
“I look at my two girls — everything’s higher and tighter and smoother. And I know it’s all appealing and it does sell, but I want my girls not to be terrified to be my age,” Brooke said.
The actress hopes her daughters will learn to see beauty beyond societal standards and embrace every stage of life without fear.
Brooke’s daughters aren’t strangers to public scrutiny either. In a previous interview with PEOPLE, Grier and Rowan opened up about being labeled “nepo babies” because of their famous mom.
“My mom says I can get you in a room, but I can’t get you to stay there,’” said Grier, who recently started modeling and has a contract with Tommy Hilfiger.
While Grier acknowledges the advantage of having a well-known mom, she’s also clear about the reality of the industry: “Obviously wanting to model and having a mom that models, helps, but also if I get there and they hate the way I look, they’re not going to ask me to come back.”
Her older sister, Rowan, who worked as an intern at Good Morning America, agreed: “Having a famous mom can only get you so far. If I sucked at my job, I’d be fired. If Rowan sucked at her job, she’d be fired. (Rowan, 21, a college senior, spent the summer as an intern at Good Morning America.) “You have to be good at what you’re doing to keep the job.”
For Brooke, success isn’t just about opportunities — it’s about hard work and persistence.
“In a weird way, I think it makes them work harder,” Brooke explained, adding, “I will say to Grier, it’s going to be uncomfortable, you’re going to be tired. There’s going to be dismissiveness or discomfort in what you’re wearing and that’s just the way it goes. You arrive early and leave after everybody and that means something.”
Rowan echoed her mom’s wisdom, admitting that while she values her mother’s support, she’s also determined to build her own path. With a smile, she said, “It would be a waste if I went about my life and didn’t use her a little bit.”
