How Usher And Wife Jenn Make Their Love Work
Usher has found the secret to keeping love and business from getting messy—boundaries.
During a candid chat on the Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast on February 11, the R&B legend opened up about how he and his wife, Jenn Goicoechea Raymond, manage to balance their relationship while both working in the music industry. And according to Usher, 46, the key is knowing where to draw the line.
“I definitely rely on her opinion about things. She’s an incredible sounding board and brings calm to some of my madness sometimes,” Usher said of Goicoechea, a respected record executive. But when it comes to working together, that’s where he draws the line. “But if we had to work together, oh my God, it wouldn’t work. It would damager our relationship.”
The couple has a policy that helps them maintain harmony. “If this is a business that you’re in, I’m going to help establish and work on it. But it’s your business, you know, and then we have the things that we do together, but it’s not a mandate. It’s a choice in relationship,” he explained.
According to Usher, clear communication and mutual understanding are what make their relationship work. In his words: “She understands my language, and I understand hers. “We understand how to hear each other, but more than hearing each other, we know how to listen. It’s one thing to have space to talk, but to have ears to hear, that is the difference in having successful relationships in life, period.”
The couple first sparked dating rumors in 2016 when Jenn posted a cozy Instagram photo of the two. By 2019, they were officially public with their romance. After several years together, they tied the knot in Las Vegas in early 2024, just days after obtaining their marriage license.
Ahead of their wedding, Usher shared his thoughts on love and commitment in an interview with PEOPLE. “When you find someone that you know is a great partner, of course, it is an honor and a pleasure to be able to share life with someone who wants to share it with you and loves you, who you are,” he said.
The Grammy-winning artist also spoke about their deep connection. “We’ve obviously made a commitment to life together because of our children. It wouldn’t be odd for us to get married — we already did here. You know what I’m saying?”
Usher and Jenn share two children – 4-year-old daughter Sovereign Bo, and 3-year-old son Sire Castrello. Usher is also a father to two older sons, Usher “Cinco” V and Naviyd Ely, from his previous marriage to Tameka Foster.
This marks Usher’s third marriage. He was previously married to Foster from 2007 to 2009 and later to his former manager, Grace Miguel, from 2015 to 2018.
