Kevin Costner Talks About Moving Forward After Painful Divorce
Kevin Costner is pressing on after his emotional divorce from Christine Baumgartner. In a candid interview on CBS Mornings on June 27, the legendary actor opened up about the difficult split. When host Gayle King asked how he was coping, Kevin said, “That’s a crushing moment. It’s powerful. It hurt. But I go forward. I have no choice — my children are looking at me.”
Determined to stay strong for his kids, Kevin added, “So I can’t wilt like a daisy, I have to go forward. I have to continue to be who I am and keep a special eye on who they are.”
Kevin and Christine began dating in 1998 and married in 2004. However, after 18 years of marriage, Christine, 50, filed for divorce on May 1, 2023, citing their separation date as April 11, 2023. The couple shares three children – 16-year-old Cayden, 15-year-old Hayes, and 14-year-old Grace.
Their marriage was officially terminated in February when Christine’s lawyers requested a Santa Barbara court to excuse both parties from completing a mandated co-parenting course. The two-time Oscar winner and Christine had previously agreed to retain joint custody of their children and reached an amicable settlement in September 2023.
A representative for Kevin told PEOPLE at the time that the two “have come to an amicable and mutually agreed upon resolution of all issues pertaining to their divorce proceedings.”
Speaking with PEOPLE about life post-divorce, Kevin said, “You just do it. You just keep talking, you keep coaching [the kids], you keep interested in what they’re interested in … I had to.”
Before his marriage to Christine, Kevin was married to Cindy Silva for 16 years, ending in divorce in 1994. They share three adult children. Between his divorce from Cindy and his relationship with Christine, Kevin briefly dated Bridget Rooney, with whom he shares a 27-year-old son, Liam.
Despite the recent heartache, Kevin remains open to the possibility of finding love again. “Yeah, I think everybody would like to be in love. There’s such a good feeling that’s associated with that. It may have to be defined in a different way. But yeah, I love the idea of that possibility,” he told PEOPLE.
