Lizzo Says Falling for Myke Wright Was Like A BookTok Romance

Lizzo is feeling the love — and spilling a little tea on how her relationship with boyfriend Myke Wright bloomed from friendship into something straight out of a romance novel. On the May 15 episode of Therapuss with Jake Shane, the Grammy-winning singer opened up about her connection with Myke, and how it all started almost ten years ago on an MTV show called Wonderland. “We both worked on this one TV show,” Lizzo shared. “I was the music girl, he was the comedy guy.”
From the very beginning, there was something special. “I was just like, ‘He’s my best friend,’” Lizzo said. “I didn’t have any guy friends like that… but I was like, ‘Wow, I can really talk to him.’”
Their bond was instant and deep, and according to Lizzo, that strong foundation made all the difference. “We had this crazy bond for years. I do love that we were friends first, so that means we can talk about anything,” she added. When host Jake Shane responded, “He’s your best friend,” Lizzo didn’t hesitate. “Literally,” she said. “That is low-key like a fantasy. Right? It’s like a ‘BookTok’ dream to be like, ‘Oh my God, like he was my best friend.’”
While fans only learned about their romance in April 2022 — after Andy Cohen accidentally let it slip on air — Lizzo and Myke had already built something real behind the scenes. They made their red carpet debut two months later at a For Your Consideration event for her Amazon reality series Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, glowing with joy and confidence.
Lizzo later got candid about their relationship journey during a December 2022 chat on The Howard Stern Show, revealing that their love grew after both had done some serious inner work. “We’re very much locked in,” she said then. But she also admitted it hadn’t always been easy getting to that point.
“I had a lot of s— to do,” Lizzo recalled, “and I still was very much in my ‘I feel unloveable’ place, and I still was very much not where I wanted to be career-wise.” Even when someone amazing came into her life, “I had these wild defenses up that made it almost impossible for a true, intimate relationship to occur.”
