Madonna Appears to Come Out as Gay
Madonna, who has been a pop music icon for nearly three decades, has recently revealed her sexuality more explicitly than she ever has before, via a TikTok video.
The video shows a pink-haired, fashionable as ever, Madonna, holding up a pair of hot pink underwear, preparing to throw them into a basket. Over the video, text says “if I miss, I’m gay!” The second clip cuts to the underwear (seemingly) deliberately missing the basket, and pans back to Madonna shrugging, unbothered, and walking out of frame.
Her TikTok bio is now rainbow heart emojis, a notion that is most commonly used by members or supporters of the LGBTQ+ community. For pretty much the entirety of her career, the musician has been an ally and inspiration to the community. It’s been easy for fans to speculate that she may be a member of the community as well, with her saying that she has a “special connection” to her gay fans. But until her recent TikTok, it has never been as probable as it is now that said special connection may go beyond simple empathy.
This isn’t the first time that she’s hinted at swinging both ways, albeit more indirectly in the past. She has locked lips onstage with fellow female artists, including Nicki Minaj backstage at the 2018 VMAs, which was showcased in Nicki’s Instagram story. Minaj was wishing Madonna a happy belated birthday, to which Madonna replied with a kiss, and the rapper let out a delighted scream.
More famously, she has locked lips with Britney Spears on stage at the 2003 VMAs. Madonna later said that this was an act of her “passing the torch” from one Queen of Pop to another. As for Spears’ take on their kiss, she said, “I didn’t know it was going to be that long and everything… I’ve never kissed a woman before.” When asked if she would do it again, she commented, “No, I would not do it again. Maybe with Madonna.”
And true to her word, the kiss between Spears and Madonna has recently been recreated, 19 years later, at the wedding of Mrs. Spears. As far as Madonna’s relationships, despite hinting at having an attraction to women, she’s only publicly dated men. Some of her famous lovers include Michael Jackson, Vanilla Ice, and Dennis Rodman. She has been married twice, but later said she regretted both marriages.
Now, at age 64, she has been casually dating a much younger man, who is 23 years old. Before this, her other boo was 28. To Madonna, it seems that age is not a major factor with dating, and based on her recent TikTok activity, gender may not be either. She has never publicly dated any women, but that just may change soon enough.
