Oscar Isaac Explains Red Carpet PDA With Jessica Chastain: “We’re Flatworms”
Aside from haute couture, last September’s Venice International Film Festival red carpet event witnessed an odd and awkward-looking PDA moment between Scenes From a Marriage co-stars Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain. During the now infamous gesture, Isaac appeared to be nuzzling the underside of Chastain’s arm which was draped around his shoulder.
Some news sites humorously pointed out that he looked like he was sniffing her armpit.
After the odd PDA, Isaac tried to deflect people’s curiosity by saying, “That wasn’t me. I don’t know who that was, but we’re on to it.”
Months after the event, however, a more recent follow-up with Isaac led to him offering a different yet still off-putting explanation, one where he claims that he and Chastain are flatworms.
The claim was made on TV during an interview on the Jess Cagle Show. In an attempt to explain the affectionate display, he compared themselves to flatworms:
“You know, you can cut them into like a hundred pieces and they will grow a whole new worm out of the little piece. So they’re basically kind of immortal and they’ve been doing work at the cellular level where they’re seeing that the cells kind of talk to each other through electricity and kind of decide, ‘Okay you’re going to make the head.’ ‘All right, I’m going to make the tail’…they’re communicating through some sort of like electro kind of magnetic situation.”
“That’s how Jessica and I kind of talk to each other. We’re just like, little flatworms,” Isaac said.
He jokingly admitted that their gestures are somewhat atypical by saying, “Maybe we should use more actual human language to talk instead of sniffing an armpit and doing things like that. That’s kind of what starts to happen no matter how much we annoy each other. No matter what happens, when you get us together, it’s like, it’s just other stuff that’s going on that is making us grow two heads.”
While on NBC’s Today Show, Chastain also took the opportunity to share her take on the PDA.
“We have all been locked in our houses for so long. When this video went viral, I was like, ‘People just need to see people touch and hold each other. And that’s why you should watch Scenes From a Marriage.”
“She’s one of the greats,” Isaac said in an interview with Dujour. “She’s someone that has always inspired me and brought the best out of me as an actor and a person. Acting with her is effortless. Nothing needs to be planned in advance. As long as I’m present, I know anything can happen because there is total trust.”
Chastain chimed in with, “Because Oscar and I are so comfortable, we didn’t have to be polite. In some sense, we could read each other’s minds.”
Regardless of how they show it, the two clearly have amazing chemistry, whether on or off-screen. At the very least, we’re sure it won’t do any harm to their newest movie’s box office performance.
