Whitney Houston’s Bodyguard Admits His Feelings For Late Singer Weren’t Always Professional

David Roberts, Whitney Houston’s former bodyguard, recently opened up about his deep connection with the legendary singer. In an interview with Daily Mail, Roberts, now 73, shared an intimate moment where his feelings for Whitney briefly crossed into personal territory.
David, who protected Whitney from 1988 to 1995 and inspired Kevin Costner’s character in The Bodyguard, recalled a night when the singer rested her head on his shoulder. In that fleeting moment, he admitted he was tempted to “give up everything” and pursue a different kind of relationship with her. However, he ultimately chose professionalism, explaining, “If you cross that line, you lose your objectivity, and that makes it dangerous for the person you’re protecting.”
Despite the undeniable bond they shared, David stayed committed to his role. He described how certain moments from the movie reflected their real-life dynamic, such as Whitney clutching the back of his shirt while escaping fans.
He also keeps a treasured memento from their time together — a faded Post-it note Whitney slipped under his hotel room door in 1988 during a trip to Hong Kong. “It’s still precious to me,” he said.
David and Whitney’s connection was built on trust, but the line between personal and professional was carefully maintained. He emphasized that his job was to protect her at all costs, even from seemingly harmless fans who could pose a hidden threat.
In hindsight, David expressed both admiration and sadness when reflecting on Whitney’s struggles and untimely death in 2012. His upcoming memoir, Protecting Whitney, set for release in January 2025, promises a heartfelt account of their time together.
