Halsey Talks Collaboration And Connection With Britney Spears On New Single “Lucky”
Halsey is giving fans an inside look at her exciting new single, Lucky and it turns out that Britney Spears played a pivotal role in bringing this track to life. The 29-year-old artist, who uses they/them and she/her pronouns, recently shared how Britney was involved in every step of the song’s journey.
In a fresh interview with BBC Radio 1, Halsey revealed that Britney was kept in the loop throughout the creation of Lucky, which pays homage to Britney’s 2000 hit of the same name.
“I shared everything with her every step of the way. Down to, from the first demo of the song. I sent her a shot-for-shot treatment of the music video just because I wanted to make sure I was totally nailing it,” she stated.
The collaboration extended beyond music, with Halsey and Britney even swapping merchandise.
“She sent me ‘Lucky’ merch for the ‘Lucky’ anniversary, and I sent her some merch and stuff like that. It’s definitely like a pinch me thing. I didn’t even know she knew who I was, kinda. And so every day I’m kind of just looking around being like, there’s a 6-year-old girl that’s freaking out,” Halsey shared.
Lucky, which debuted on July 26, marking Halsey’s first release since their June single, The End, also features an interpolation of Monica’s 1997 classic Angel of Mine. The track explores themes of fame, motherhood, and personal health struggles.
Halsey has been open about their health issues, including a diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder. The music video, showing Halsey’s shaved head beneath a wig, nods to both Britney’s Lucky and Toxic videos.
In an Instagram post, Halsey shared the emotional rollercoaster of creating the video. They wrote, “It was really challenging to incorporate so many conflicting emotions in just a few minutes. this campaign has been fun because I WANT to have fun, but I made lot of this art when I was suffering.”
However, not everything was smooth sailing. Shortly after the video’s release, Britney appeared to criticize it on X (formerly known as Twitter), claiming she felt “harassed, violated, and bullied.” The post was soon deleted with the singer clarifying it was “fake news” and that she loved Halsey.
Britney later expressed her admiration for Halsey, reaffirming her support.
In response, Halsey took to social media to show their support for Britney, writing: “I love Britney!!!! I always have and always will. You were the first person who ever made me realize what it means to feel inspired. And you continue to inspire me every day.”
