Lil Wayne Finally Weighs In On Drake And Kendrick Lamar’s Rap Battle With Seeming Support For Drake
After months of silence, Lil Wayne has broken his silence on the ongoing feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. The hip-hop icon, 41, showed his support for fellow Young Money rapper Drake, 37, during a performance at Las Vegas’ Zouk Nightclub on July 13.
While on stage, Wayne altered the intro of his and Drake’s collaboration The Motto with lyrics from Kendrick’s diss track Not Like Us, adding a twist by rapping, “They don’t like us” instead of the original “They not like us.”
Wayne’s gesture came after Kendrick took a shot at Drake in Not Like Us, with the line, “F—ed on Wayne girl while he was in jail, that’s connivin’ / Then get his face tatted like a bitch apologizin’.”
This lyric refers to the rumor that Drake was involved with Wayne’s then-girlfriend Tammy Torres while Wayne was incarcerated in 2010 for gun charges in New York. Despite the drama, Wayne and Drake seem to have moved past it, recently reuniting on stage during Drake’s It’s All a Blur — Big as the What? tour in April. They performed their old hits like She Will, Right Above It, and I’m on One.
The feud between Drake and Kendrick has been heating up since March when the Alright hitmaker dropped a surprise verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s hit song Like That, targeting Drake. The two rappers exchanged diss tracks, culminating in Drake’s The Heart Part 6” and Kendrick’s Not Like Us. The latter peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, especially after its Compton-set music video was released on July 4.
Kendrick performed Not Like Us multiple times during his Ken & Friends: The Pop Out concert in Inglewood, California, on June 19. The performance featured musicians from various historically feuding sections of South Los Angeles, symbolizing unity. “But you ain’t never seen this many sections on one stage. Let the world see this. We need to show everything,” Lamar said to the crowd at the Kia Forum.
“This is unity. Unity from all sides of LA, East LA to West, Crips, Bloods, this makes me emotional,” he added.
