Lola Young Sues Producer Carter Lang Over Songwriting Credits
Lola Young is stepping back into the spotlight to fight for her songwriting rights. The 24-year-old Messy singer has filed a lawsuit against producer Carter Lang, accusing him of wrongly taking credit for four of her songs. The case, filed in London’s intellectual property court on October 1, also names Sony Music Publishing as a co-claimant on Lola’s behalf.
A statement from her legal team shared with PEOPLE said the lawsuit was filed “with immense disappointment,” especially after “recent events.” The lawyers insisted Lang’s claims were “strongly refuted” and that they “will not allow Lola’s reputation and integrity to be called into question — particularly so long after the sessions took place and agreements were put in place.”
“Lola has always been authentic in her songwriting process and acknowledges songwriting contributions where appropriate,” the statement continued. “This dispute has been ongoing for several months and we look forward to the truth being established.”
Carter, who has previously worked with SZA, Post Malone, Justin Bieber, Reneé Rapp and
Rosé, has not yet commented publicly on the matter.
The legal battle comes just days after a worrying moment for the rising star. During her performance at the All Things Go Music Festival in New York on Sept. 27, she collapsed on stage mid-set after telling fans she’d been through “a tricky couple of days.”
“Sometimes life can really make you feel like you can’t continue,” she told the crowd moments before the incident, “but you know what, today I woke up and I made the decision to come here, and I wanted to be cool … and sometimes life can throw you lemons, and you just gotta make lemonade.”
Hours later, she reassured fans through her Instagram Stories: “Hi, for anyone who saw my set at All Things Go today, I am doing OK now. Thank you for all of your support, Lola xxx.”
Two days later, she announced that she was taking a break from music to focus on her health. “I’m going away for a while. It pains me to say I have to cancel everything for the foreseeable future,” she wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for all the love and support.”
She apologized to fans who had bought tickets and promised refunds, adding, “I really hope you’ll give me a second chance once I’ve had some time to work on myself and come back stronger.”
