Taylor Swift Tears Up While Honoring Her Late Grandmother During The Eras Tour
Taylor Swift’s Eras tour is an incredibly special one for the pop star and her fans. Perhaps the most ambitious tour yet, the 52-date, sold-out tour is the culmination of her 17-year-long career. It also marks her return to live music after the cancellation of Lover Fest in 2020.
As iconic as this milestone of a tour already is, it seems to be the gift that keeps on giving. Getting to listen to a live performance of some of her most celebrated hits over the course of her career might have been enough for Swift’s fans. However, she is known to go over and above, which has already become evident through the course of the tour.
Her intricate world-building for the tour includes stage changes for nearly each of the 44 songs and several outfit changes over the course of over three hours. That’s not all, the global superstar has really gone all out with the Easter eggs and bonus treats for her fans.
Each show will also have a mini acoustic set with a surprise song or two that will only be played once over the course of the tour unless Swift says, “I mess it up so badly that I have to do it over again in some other city.”
The tour set list comprises around one to eight tracks from each of her 10 full-length studio albums, including the song “Marjorie” from her ninth studio album, Evermore (2020). This particular track was a very special one and pays tribute to her grandmother, opera singer Marjorie Finlay. The lyrics are incredibly touching and talk about how Marjorie is still very much alive in Swift’s head.
Swift kicked off the Eras tour in Glendale, Arizona, by keeping her late grandmother’s memory alive. The heartwarming performance had Marjorie’s vocals echoing through the State Farm Stadium as supporting background vocals to Swift’s melodious voice.
It is during this performance that Swift got emotional and teared up. Marjorie was Swift’s maternal grandmother and passed away on June 1, 2003. Swift cited Finlay as being her inspiration to pursue her music career. This only makes her Era’s tour tribute even more special.
All of this comes after the sales for the Era’s tour tickets had caused a major fiasco as Ticketmaster was unable to keep up with the astronomical demand. Users were logged out or frozen in the queue, as the pre-sale website crashed from the heavy site traffic.
The platform received a lot of flak, and Swift herself voiced her displeasure at how fans “went through several bear attacks to get them [the Era’s tour tickets]”. While fans are suing Ticketmaster, it is nice to see that Swift’s tour seems to be going off beautifully.
Marjorie will certainly be proud of how far her granddaughter has come in her musical career, especially considering all the obstacles she had to overcome to get here!
