Christopher McQuarrie Says “Mission: Impossible Finale” Will Leave You Breathless

Tom Cruise is gearing up for his final mission as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and the anticipation is sky-high. Director Christopher McQuarrie, who has worked with Cruise since 2015’s Rogue Nation, says the new film has some of the most intense moments in the franchise’s history.
Speaking to Empire magazine, Christopher revealed an unforgettable reaction from an early screening. “We had a small screening, and someone said, ‘I was suffocating throughout the entire sequence. I almost had a heart attack,’” he shared. “And I thought, ‘I guess we did something right.’”
While Christopher didn’t name the scene in question, the trailer has already teased jaw-dropping stunts. From underwater dives to submarine infiltrations and aerial maneuvers, Tom once again takes the lead in redefining action cinema.
The director also revealed that the upcoming film features “the most difficult thing” Tom and the production team have ever attempted. Although details remain under wraps, fans know that the actor’s dedication to practical stunts ensures the final chapter will deliver unforgettable moments.
The movie features an all-star cast, including returning favorites Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, and Pom Klementieff. New faces like Bob Odenkirk, Nick Offerman, and Hannah Waddingham join the ensemble, adding fresh energy to Ethan Hunt’s final adventure.
Production for The Final Reckoning spanned stunning global locations, including Malta, Norway, South Africa, and the U.K. After halting in July 2023 due to the Hollywood writers and actors’ strikes, filming resumed in March 2024, fueling even more anticipation for Tom’s farewell as Hunt.
Originally titled Dead Reckoning Part Two, the film changed its name in October 2023 to emphasize its role as the series finale. The movie is set to hit theaters on May 23, marking the culmination of nearly three decades of Mission: Impossible adventures.
Even as he bids farewell to Ethan Hunt, Tom, now 62, continues to push the boundaries of filmmaking. He’s working on a third Top Gun film, a collaboration with Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and a long-awaited project to shoot a movie in outer space. Tom last updated fans on the space film in July 2023, saying he has been “working on it diligently.”
For longtime fans, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is more than just a movie; it’s the end of an era. With death-defying stunts, an incredible cast, and a director dedicated to delivering heart-pounding thrills, Ethan Hunt’s final mission is set to be one of the most memorable chapters in action movie history.
