Dwayne Johnson Talks Sharing “Good Chemistry” With Chris Evans During “Red One” Filming
Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans are teaming up to save Christmas — and deliver plenty of laughs along the way. The duo’s upcoming holiday action-comedy, Red One, hit theaters on November 15, and got fans buzzing about their on-screen chemistry.
At the film’s Berlin premiere in November, Dwayne, 52, shared how much fun he had working alongside Chris, 43. Despite playing the more serious role of Callum Drift, a security chief from the North Pole, Dwayne admitted keeping a straight face during filming wasn’t always easy. Asked how he kept a straight face during funny scenes, he responded, “No, so many times I laughed. I am notorious for ruining takes. I laugh; it’s just what happens.”
“Chris is a very funny guy,” Dwayne also told PEOPLE, adding, “He’s also very talented.”
“And I thought earlier that maybe me and Chris might have some good chemistry. So did he. [And] we did,” the actor said further.
He went on to share how he “wanted to make a Christmas movie” but he did not want it to be just any one. According to him, he chose to be a part of Red One because “the material was good” and he loved the script.
“I think when you get into acting … the idea of making a Christmas movie … you wanna make sure that you make a good one. You don’t want to be part of a crew that makes a s—– Christmas movie. So I think we made a good one,” he said.
In Red One, the story revolves around Santa Claus (played by J.K. Simmons) being kidnapped, throwing Christmas into chaos. Dwayne’s character, Callum, is part of the North Pole’s E.L.F. Task Force. He’s forced to team up with the world’s most notorious bounty hunter, Jack O’Malley (played by Chris), on a high-stakes, globe-trotting mission to save the holiday season.
The film, directed by Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jumanji: The Next Level), is based on an original story from Hiram Garcia, president of production at Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions. The cast also includes Lucy Liu, Bonnie Hunt, Nick Kroll, Kiernan Shipka, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, and J.K. Simmons.
