Fresh Off the Boat’s Constance Wu Accuses A Senior Producer Of Intimidation And Sexual Harassment
Constance Wu has accused the senior producer of Fresh Off The Boat, the sitcom she stars in, of intimidation and sexual harassment in her upcoming memoir, Making A Scene.
She reiterated her claim during her interview with New York Times. While Constance was open about sharing details about this senior producer and his controlling behavior during the first two seasons of the family sitcom, the actress was careful not to name him. She has been very consistent in simply referring to the man using an initial.
Fresh Off The Boat is lightly inspired by the life of Eddie Huang, a chef and food connoisseur. Eddie’s 2013 autobiography has served as an excellent resource for some of the episodes’ storylines. This sitcom is the first TV show in the US where the main characters are Asian Americans.
The story revolves around the lives of a Taiwanese-American family living in Florida, set in the 1990s. The show went into production in 2014 and premiered on ABC the following February with positive reception from viewers.
The Crazy Rich Asian actress stated that this senior producer started exhibiting controlling behaviors during the first season. Constance needed to run all her business matters by him. This producer also had a big say in what she wore.
Constance plays the role of Jessica Huang in Fresh Off The Boat. This was her very first TV show, and she was thrown into the world of sitcoms unprepared. Many believed that as a 30-year-old actress who had no parents in the business, she knew what she was doing.
But apparently, people thought wrong because the assumptions and misconceptions made the actress embarrassed and paranoid.
Constance, whose biological parents emigrated from Taiwan, further revealed that the senior producer’s inappropriate and unsolicited behavior worsened during a sporting event where the man placed his hand on the actress’ thigh, eventually grazing her crotch.
She confronted him and told him to stop, and both attempted to move on from what happened. Back then, Constance shared that she did not speak up about what was happening because she was afraid of the consequences that may occur if she did.
But with the show’s success, she slowly became more confident about her status on the front and decided it was time to speak up and stand up for herself. She stated that she was afraid of losing her job, but after the first two seasons, it was her time to say no to intimidation and sexual harassment from this unnamed producer.
She also accounts that the show was in her best interest, and naming the senior producer earlier than she could have impacted the show.
After an argument between Constance and the senior producer over attending a film festival, they are no longer on speaking terms.
Constance stars with Randall Park, Forrest Wheeler, Hudson Yang, Ian Chen, Chelsey Crisp, Lucille Soong, and Ray Wise in this funny family sitcom.
