Glenn Close Recalls Bloody NYC Dog Walk While Filming Fatal Attraction
Glenn Close had an unforgettable experience during the filming of Fatal Attraction, and it all started with a simple dog walk. Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show, the 77-year-old actress shared a bizarre memory from the 1987 thriller that had the audience laughing.
“I was in the middle of shooting. I had a little dog,” Glenn began, clarifying it wasn’t her current dog, Pip. “…andI had to walk her. I had blood in my hair. I had also all these spots and, you know, things all over [me]. I looked scary, like I’d been badly attacked, right?”
As Glenn strolled through the streets of New York City in her costume from the film’s intense final scene, she noticed three young women walking toward her. Panic set in as she realized she might scare them. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, I forgot what I look like. What am I going to say to them?’”
But to her surprise, the women didn’t seem to notice her dramatic appearance. “And they got closer and closer, and they said, ‘What a cute little dog,’” Glenn recalled, laughing. Drew Barrymore chimed in, “Didn’t even notice. It’s New York City.”
Glenn also reflected on Fatal Attraction’s famously controversial ending. Initially, her character, Alex Forrest, was supposed to take her own life in a way that mirrored the opera Madame Butterfly. However, audiences disliked the original ending.
“…when they tested it, the audience hated her so much for coming between that perfect little family even though he cheated on his beautiful wife,” she explained.
The ending was rewritten to show Alex attempting to kill Beth, the wife of Douglas’ character, and being shot in self-defense. While it worked for the audience, Glenn didn’t think it made sense for Alex’s character. “She was not a psychopath,” she noted. Initially resistant to the change, she was ultimately persuaded to do it by Michael Douglas and a friend.
Glenn remains one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, with no plans to slow down. She stars alongside Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz in Netflix’s Back in Action and will appear in the upcoming Knives Out 3.
Speaking to PEOPLE in August, Glenn opened up about the challenges of her career. “You have to have incredible resilience, certainly in the beginning, because you will have disappointment after disappointment, rejection after rejection. You have to have a crazy engine that keeps you going,” she stated.
