House Of The Dragons Is A Continuous Success Episode After Episode
HBO’s House of the Dragons is on a roll, with viewers hanging on until the next episode is released.
The show’s record-breaking premiere logged in a little under 10 million viewers, which is already astounding. And for every episode, new viewers join them, adding to the staggering number.
The series’ fourth episode, titled King of the Narrow Sea, garnered 5% more viewers than the third episode’s Second of his Name, which an already impressive 2.47 million audiences have watched.
The show displayed a slight increase in its linear viewers, but the most significant increase in viewers came from streaming services like HBO Go, HBO Max, and HBO Now. With the fourth episode, 2.536 million people were tuned in.
House of Dragons is a prequel to the highly successful Game of Thrones series that had everybody taking sides from 2011 to 2019. This new HBO series is based on events that occurred two centuries before those in The Game of Thrones. As the name suggests, the storyline’s focus is the House Targaryen and how they go downhill into a civil war. And of course, it still has its storyline about the quest for power, so the series is also set to determine who will be the ruler after King Viserys I.
With the week-over-week increase in views, the current week marks a new competition, with Sunday’s episode going face to face against NBC’s Sunday Night Football. This is also the same day when the return of HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is going to happen. But these internal and external competitions don’t seem to impact the show that people would tune in to.
Although Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is after the House of the Dragon show, it has shifted the repeat airings to a much later schedule, but again, the impact on viewership is seen as very minimal.
And this is good news because the show lost about 1 million viewers during its second and third episodes, so a comeback with the fourth episode was needed. And thanks to multiple playbacks, the number of viewers spiked up to a whopping 20 million, making it HBO’s largest premiere audience as of date.
With every episode, the viewers’ database keeps growing and has amassed 20 million patrons in a single month. And given that Season 2 of the show has already been approved, it seems like everything is going well for the House of Dragons crew.
The renewal was not certain at the onset, given that HBO did not meet the target audience during the first episode, but with the steady and stable increase in viewers, everyone is all set for the second season.
What’s exciting is there’ll be many changes happening behind the scenes, so if viewers are anticipating episode five, there’s plenty to be excited about in Season 2. For one, co-showrunner and director Miguel Sapochnik, with the series creator Ryan Condal, will be stepping down, and Alan Taylor is picking up the reins as director and executive producer.
