Kurt Sutter Says He Can’t Watch Jackson White In “Tell Me Lies”

Jackson White might have found his breakout role in Tell Me Lies, but not everyone in his family is eager to watch it. The psychological drama, where he stars as the manipulative and toxic Stephen DeMarco, has kept audiences hooked for two seasons. However, his stepdad, Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, prefers to stay away.
Kurt, who has been married to Jackson’s mom, actress Katey Sagal, since 2004, admitted on the Broad Ideas podcast that he finds the show tough to watch. “It’s just hard to… because I know Grace really well because they’re together, so it’s just like, oh, okay,” he said, referring to Jackson’s co-star and real-life girlfriend, Grace Van Patten.
When host Rachel Bilson playfully asked if he didn’t want to watch the couple “make out,” Kurt laughed and agreed that was exactly the issue.
Despite his reluctance to watch, Kurt acknowledged the show’s success, praising its “great soap quality” and saying it’s “doing very well.” He also mentioned that Jackson and Grace are gearing up to film season 3 — at least, he thinks so.
While Kurt might avoid Tell Me Lies, it’s likely he caught a glimpse of season 1, considering Katey appeared in it as Jackson’s onscreen mother. The actor has previously shared that his mom was initially against him pursuing acting, telling him to “do something else” and not allowing him to take it seriously until he turned 18. “I had to grow up first,” he told PEOPLE at the time.
Even if Kurt skips watching the show, he can’t entirely escape hearing about it. On the Slice of Pie podcast, which he co-hosts with Katey, Jackson revealed some behind-the-scenes moments, including being told he was “not thrusting right” while filming a sex scene in season 1. He also described the intensity of filming intimate scenes, noting that since there was only one intimacy coordinator, they had “sex week” on set. “There’d be sex scenes all day long,” Jackson shared, explaining that the coordinator had to juggle multiple shoots as different characters filmed their intimate moments.
