No Wonder Woman 3 After Director Patty Jenkins Rejected the Studio Notes and Walked Away
The highly anticipated return of Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, has come to a grinding halt as the Warner Bros. DC universe stands at the cusp of a new era. This news of Wonder Woman 3 getting canceled has shocked fans, given the hype that surrounded the third installment of the DC movie series.
The reason for the movie getting canceled was that Patty Jenkins, the director of the first two movies, rejected studio notes on her treatment for the sequel, leading her to exit the project. Warner Bros. studio executives were not too pleased with Patty’s approach to the third sequel and suggested a change of direction.
Co-chairs and co-CEOs of Warner Bros. Pictures, Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, were named as the top executives who were not in favor of Patty’s treatment and thus rejected the idea of moving forward and continuing with the film. Peter Safran and James Gunn also shared that Patty’s version of Wonder Woman just doesn’t fit with what they have in mind.
Michael and Pamela shared the feedback with Patty and even wondered if the director would want to make some adjustments so the sequel could head off in a direction everyone was happy with.
Unfortunately, this didn’t go too well, and Patty rejected the offer. It was also revealed that Patty even accused the studio of not comprehending her vision or the trajectory of the Wonder Woman movie franchise.
Patty even went on to inform the CEOs that they were in the wrong, lacked understanding of the Wonder Woman character, and didn’t understand her and what she was trying to accomplish.
An insider also reported that Patty emailed Michael a link that leads to the Wikipedia definition of “character arc.”
The studio reached out to Patty in an attempt to make Wonder Woman 3 possible by giving her another chance to pitch in another approach or direction for the movie. But the director apparently refused to take any feedback or criticism and decided it was time to walk away and focus on her next project.
Patty’s departure from the franchise has undoubtedly raised a lot of questions about the future of Wonder Woman movies. The studio has, as of now, decided not to push through with it — hopefully just temporarily.
However, even though the studio has not entirely killed off the Wonder Woman franchise, it is yet to be seen how Gal Gadot will react to this news. Based on Gadot’s recent tweet about looking forward to the future of Wonder Woman, it seems she may not yet be aware of the film getting shelved:
Meanwhile, James Gunn also took to social media to address all the rumors about DC re-boots, saying, “we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives.”
