Scarlett Johansson Refuses To Join Instagram For “Jurrasic World”

Scarlett Johansson is holding her ground — social media is just not for her. The 40-year-old actress recently revealed that despite pressure from studios and even her own beauty brand, she’s staying offline.
Speaking with InStyle, Scarlett shared that Universal Pictures had asked her to join Instagram to promote her upcoming film, Jurassic World: Rebirth. “…Even today, I got an email from Universal, and they’re like, ‘Hey, would you consider joining Instagram in tandem with the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth?'” she recalled. But for Scarlett, the answer was simple: no.
She admitted she often feels pressured to sign up, but it just doesn’t sit right with her. “Is there a way I could do this and stay true to who I am?” she asked herself. “It didn’t feel like I could.”
The Black Widow star has always been clear about her reasons for avoiding social media. “The work that I put out there is all based in truth. That’s the key ingredient,” she explained. “So if I was a person who really enjoyed social media, then I could totally get on the bandwagon. But I’m not. And I think the film will do fine.”
Even when running her beauty brand, The Outset, Scarlett stayed firm on her decision. Her former co-founder, Kate Foster, once pushed her to join Instagram, and she even brought the dilemma to her therapist. “I got close enough to talk to my therapist about it,” she said. “I was like, I guess this is something I need to do. But it goes against my core values.”
Though she occasionally appears on The Outset’s Instagram, she calls it “minimally invasive” and keeps her personal life far away from the online spotlight.
This isn’t the first time Scarlett has spoken about her aversion to social media. On The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast in April 2023, she confessed that she once tried Instagram but deleted it after just three days. “I honestly am too fragile of a person to have social media,” she admitted. “My ego is too fragile. I can’t deal with it. My brain is too fragile, I’m like a delicate flower. I have enough anxiety.”
Her brief experience on Instagram was enough to confirm it wasn’t for her. She found herself scrolling through a stranger’s page for 20 minutes, learning everything about them. “I now know you have a pit bull, two daughters, and live in Burbank,” she laughed. “I was like, I just wasted 17 minutes of time.”
But what really unsettled her was the feeling of missing out — on a random person’s life. “I felt so bad, like I was missing out on this random person’s life. I can’t do this. I’m too fragile, I have so much anxiety about other things,” she said.
