The Lord of the Rings is Becoming a Television Series
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a spin-off series that Amazon Prime is producing. The full-length trailer is set to release Thursday, July 14.
This spin-off series will take place thousands of years before the first trilogy and before The Hobbit takes place as well. The time period is set during Middle Earth’s Second Age, which sums up almost all of the information we know about this spin-off’s plot.
The series will focus on a half-Elven architect named Elrond, who is also swept up in the political field. Elrond ends up with the Ring of Air, which sets the stage for the main plot of the series.
Along with this plot, the show will follow the final alliance between Elves and men, the kingdom of Nύmenor, and the rise of Sauron, the primary antagonist of the original trilogy.
Although the story will be loosely following Tolkein’s writing, creators Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne will be using their own creativity to construct the narrative that they find most fitting for the story. So some themes may not follow the classic storylines from the original Lord of the Rings.
The rights that Amazon bought are for a show totaling 50 hours, which gives McKay and Payne a lot of creative freedom. Since the plan is set for multiple seasons, fans will have to wait for much of the storyline to be revealed.
The short trailer that was released teased an ominous scene, with a meteor crashing through the sky as several characters watch. As the meteor lands and the image cuts out, viewers are left with the statement “The Journey Begins.”
Whatever the creators have planned, it must be big. To attempt a spin-off so many years down the line from a famous movie series is bold and daring, but it has the potential to become a major success.
The series will be on Amazon Prime’s streaming service in early September.
