Ye Dropped, Documentary Scrapped; Or Is This A Marketing Stunt?
Kanye West is known for dropping his women, but he’s the one getting dropped this time. Several brands decided to drop Ye, and these are brands that he has partnered with in recent years, including Adidas and Balenciaga.
Kanye West was dropped by his talent agency, and a documentary on him was scrapped following antisemitic comments.
It’s been a rough couple of weeks for Kanye West. The rapper has seen his Twitter and Instagram accounts canceled, an upcoming TV series canceled, and now his entire documentary has been scrapped.
The documentary was scheduled to air on HBO but will no longer be released.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO said: “HBO Documentary Films had originally commissioned a film from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Marina Zenovich about the life and career of Kanye West. We have decided not to move forward with the project at this time.”
The reason behind the decision is due to West’s recent controversial remarks, including saying that he believed slavery was voluntary and claiming that Jews control the media.
West also stirred up controversy when he donned a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt during Paris Fashion Week. Surprisingly, that’s not where his seemingly offensive behavior ends.
After Ye’s latest comments about Jews and slavery resurfaced, UTA CEO Jeremy Zimmer denounced them on Twitter. He said that UTA does not tolerate discrimination at UTA and that Ye’s remarks did not reflect their culture.
The news comes after several other Hollywood figures disavowed Ye’s sentiments as well as his celebrity status. His estranged wife, Kim Kardashian, released a statement condemning her husband’s remarks and announcing that she would no longer use her public platform to support him publicly.
She also deleted all photos of herself with Ye on Instagram. Other celebrities joined her in denouncing the rapper’s remarks and distancing themselves from him.
Kim Kardashian has broken her silence on the subject of Kanye West’s recent controversies.
The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star, who has been famously quiet about her ex-husband since their divorce in 2016, took to Twitter on October 24th to address both his controversial comments about slavery and his alleged anti-Semitic behavior.
In a series of tweets, Kardashian wrote: “Hate speech is never OK or excusable. With the Jewish community, I demand a halt to the horrific violence and cruel words directed at them.”
This followed reports that Kim and Kanye’s longtime pal Anna Wintour had broken off relations with Kanye and canceled any planned collaborations between the rapper and Vogue.
So where does that leave us? Is Ye actually canceled, or is this just a marketing stunt? We’re not sure.
Is this all a big joke? Is Ye really retiring from music? Does it matter?
We’ll leave you with one final thought—if we’ve learned anything from this experience, it’s that we need to be kinder to ourselves and others. Especially if you’re a celebrity.
