Pop Star Cyndi Lauper Makes Unexpected White House Appearance During The Gay Marriage Bill Signing
Last Tuesday, Cyndi Lauper made an unannounced appearance in the briefing room of the White House. This was ahead of the signing of the Respect for Marriage Act by President Joe Biden. The signing’s official venue was the White House South Lawn.
The singer was there, though, because she was to perform during the afternoon ceremony. Being a longtime advocate of the LGBTQ, Cyndi said, “We can rest easy tonight because our families are validated. Because now we’re allowed to love somebody, which sounds odd, Americans can now love who we love.”
In addition, she also blessed the President and everyone who worked to make the change possible. The Girls Just Want To Have Fun hitmaker shared that with this bill, the American people, including their children, would no longer need to fear their future.
At the event, Cyndi donned a black pantsuit and rhinestone-embellished shirt.
When introducing the pop star, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre casually said to the crowd that she had brought an iconic friend with her who needed no further introduction. Karine then proceeded to usher the singer to the podium.
Cyndi was the only prominent entertainer attending the event. The outdoor event drew a crowd of about 2,000 and 3,000 folks.
President Joe Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act. The act ultimately provides federal marriage security to interracial couples and same-sex couples.
Later on, President Biden posted a tweet stating, “Today, I signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law. We are reaffirming a fundamental truth: Love is love, and Americans should have the right to marry the person they love.”
The president’s guest list for the momentous event included well-known drag queens like Marti Gould Cummings, who even shared the invitation he received on Instagram. He expressed his gratitude for the invitation to the historic bill signing, along with an image of the invitation.
Brita Filter, who competed in RuPaul’s Drag Race’s 12th season, mentioned that she was also invited to the outdoor gathering.
Inviting the drag queens is an ultimate show of support by the President. Earlier, Ron DeSantis, Republican Florida Governor—speculated to be Potus’ rival in the 2024 US Presidential elections—made it appear that drag shows are a matter of cultural conflict that needs to be addressed and stopped.
The governor even stated that he would file a complaint after the release of a video where a child was part of a drag show audience in Florida. During the show, one drag queen was showing off her naked, large, and fake breasts.
As soon as the performing queen saw the child, she covered her breast, but it was too late. Since then, “family-friendly drag shows” have become a hot topic and have stemmed from differences in point of view among many politicians.
DeSantis stated in a press release last July that “having kids involved in this is wrong. That is not consistent with our law and policy in Florida.” Even Miami’s R House’s liquor license was questioned and threatened to be revoked due to the incident.
Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, and the First Lady, Jill Biden, were also present.
