Adele Reveals James Corden Inspired Lyrics in Hit Song ‘I Drink Wine’
In a heartwarming moment during the last ever Carpool Karaoke episode with James Corden, Adele revealed that a verse in one of her hit songs was inspired by the TV host. The segment, released on Monday, showed the singer candidly sharing for the first time how a six-hour conversation she had with James influenced her writing in the song I Drink Wine.
During the car ride, Adele emotionally recounted how she and James had gone on holiday with their families after she finalized her divorce from Simon Konecki in March 2021. She described how a conversation they had on the way home, in which James admitted he was going through a difficult time with work and the Internet, inspired her to write the song.
“We were on our way home [from the holiday] and my mood had changed and it was like the first year that I felt like I had to hold myself accountable, for just being an adult,” she stated.
The Hello hitmaker explained to James that the first verse of I Drink Wine was some of her best writing, influenced by their chat. “I went to the studio a couple of weeks later, I wrote [I Drink Wine] and I sang it into my phone and sent it to you, and I remember you said “that’s exactly how I was feeling,” she shared.
She added that the verse was so meaningful to her that she sang it into her phone and sent it to James. She remembered James saying, “that’s exactly how I was feeling.”
James became teary-eyed as he listened to the track and called it a privilege to have a song dedicated to him. He was amazed that Adele had managed to take everything he was feeling about himself and life and put it into a verse. “It is the greatest privilege, from a conversation so honest between friends, that you would create such a thing,” he stated.
The hit song includes lines such as “How come we’ve both become a version of a person we don’t even like? We’re in love with the world, but the world just wants to bring us down, by putting ideas in our heads, that corrupt our hearts somehow.”
Adele and James’ friendship goes way back, with the pair sharing a history of hilarious moments on Carpool Karaoke. James announced in March 2022 that he would be stepping down from The Late Late Show, and this last episode with Adele was a fitting tribute to their friendship and their time together on the show.
