Angela Bassett Says Oscars Loss Disappointed Her Kids
Angela Bassett shared her journey and family anecdotes on the latest episode of Live with Kelly and Mark. She spoke about her recent honorary Oscar win and the disappointment of not clinching the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2023 Academy Awards.
Kelly Ripa, expressing sentiments echoed by many, conveyed her surprise at Angela not winning the prestigious award last year.
“I gotta tell you, I think there was a collective — I was really expecting you to win that Academy Award last year. And I’m sure I’m not alone,” Kelly stated.
The actress, known for her grace both on and off-screen, revealed her children were also surprised, as they had unwavering belief in her victory.
“So were my kids. They were. They just knew it, hands down,” she said.
Highlighting the immense support from her family, including her twins Slater and Bronwyn, 18, born to her husband Courtney B. Vance, Angela shared how her family stood by her side during the Oscar ceremony, expressing disappointment but also the importance of resilience and grace in the face of adversity.
Reflecting on the experience, she emphasized the value of perseverance and the ever-changing nature of success.
“They were indeed, they were with me the night of the Oscars and it didn’t happen. So they were supremely disappointed, as young people can be. But it was a teachable moment just to, you know, to carry yourself, hold yourself, go to the parties with grace,” she shared, adding, “And know that, just keep one foot in front of the other, keep going, keep following your dreams. Because 24 hours, what a difference a day makes.”
The actress, acclaimed for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, recently graced the cover of PEOPLE magazine alongside Courtney. They discussed their twins’ transition into adulthood, as they embark on college tours, marking another milestone in their parenting journey.
Coutney described the extensive college tours they undertook, symbolizing their readiness for the next chapter. In his words, “We saw 26 schools, all-day tours at each school. And so they’re ready. It’s another transition. We went down the baby aisle, now we’ve got to go down the empty nest aisle and get used to them not being here.”
Angela, reflecting on her twins’ 18th birthday, expressed pride in their maturity, saying she was “just proud of the young adults that they are becoming, the friendships that they make, the maturity that they exhibit.”
