Why Ryan Reynolds Is Unsure About Another “Deadpool” Movie
Ryan Reynolds is questioning whether Deadpool 4 will ever happen, and the answer might depend more on family than fans. The actor, 48, opened up during an honest chat with Andrew Garfield for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, sharing why balancing his iconic Marvel character with life as a dad is no easy feat.
“My feeling is that character works very well in two ways. One is scarcity and surprise,” Ryan said, reflecting on the third installment, Deadpool & Wolverine, which hit theaters this summer. “It had been six years since the last one and part of the reason is that it swallows my whole life.”
From development to marketing, playing Deadpool demands Ryan’s full attention. But as a father to daughters James (9), Inez (7), Betty (4), and baby boy Olin, whom he welcomed with wife Blake Lively in February 2023, that kind of all-consuming commitment isn’t always an option.
“I don’t ever want to be an absentee, and I don’t ever want to miss stuff,” Ryan admitted, adding, “I, like, kind of die inside when I see their face and they have a competition or they have a sports thing or something and I missed it.”
Ryan’s priorities are clear — family comes first. His deep bond with his kids and wife Blake often takes center stage in his life. Even his good friend Taylor Swift has publicly acknowledged his devotion to his family. This summer, Taylor playfully referred to herself as the godmother to Ryan and Blake’s children in an Instagram post about Deadpool & Wolverine.
“Shout out to Wade Wilson, aka my godkids’ sperm donor!” Taylor joked in her caption, referencing Deadpool’s real name. Ryan loved it. “I’m going to need that on my gravestone, actually,” he told Deadline in November.
“She is the godparent to my daughters. That was very sweet. Not just sweet, that was, like, you could probably quantify a box office based on Taylor just doing something like that,” he added.
