Copyright Lawsuit Against Childish Gambino Dropped
A New York federal court dismissed the copyright infringement lawsuit filed against Childish Gambino on March 24. It looks like the actor-musician can finally breathe a sigh of relief after over a year of legal battles and controversy.
For those of you who can’t remember, Emelike Nwosuocha, also known as Kidd Wes, sued Gambino, whose real name is Donald Glover, for allegedly stealing elements of his song “Made In America” for his hit release “This is America.” Wes claimed that Gambino’s track used the chorus and other parts of his song without his permission.
He filed the lawsuit back in June 2021, and it made headlines in the music industry. Many fans and critics were surprised by the allegations, as “This is America” had already won multiple awards and gained widespread critical acclaim for its political and social commentary.
The news of the dropped lawsuit has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, with many wondering how this will affect future copyright disputes. However, the New York judge declared in no uncertain terms that the copyright infringement was not substantial. For now, it seems that Gambino can rest easy and focus on his upcoming projects.
The actor-director and singer’s television thriller series “Swarm”, which he co-created with Atlanta writer Nabers, came out this month. The show that packs a powerful punch and explores celebrity obsession is now streaming on Prime Video.
With cameos from Billy Dee Williams, Olympian Gabby Douglas, and Carole Baskin, the meta-marketing campaign for Swarm is generating quite the buzz. There was also recent controversy over Carol Bailey’s sex scene in the show due to its explicit nature.
“It’s not about seeing me in the mirror of that scene. But I think because it’s me doing it, that’s what kinda makes it blow out of proportion,” Bailey explained, referring to the two seconds of her naked reflection in a mirror during her recent appearance on The Big Boy’s Neighbourhood Show.
Donald Glover’s TV reboot of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, regarding which he had a falling out with Phoebe Waller-Bridge last year, is set to come out this year too. The 2005 hit film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, served as the inspiration for the spy series that he co-created with Francesca Sloane.
Fans are excited and curious about the show, which began filming in the summer of 2022 and will come out this year. 2022 was also the year that Atlanta finished its fourth season.
While fans continue to enjoy Glover’s most recent musical offering from 2020, he is also playing a villain in an upcoming Spider-Man movie that is eagerly anticipated.
The artist has been constantly churning out work and keeping his fans on the edge of their seats, eager to see what he surprises them with next.
That said, he can catch his breath now and celebrate the dropping of the lawsuit. “This is America” is still a powerful and groundbreaking piece of music—and now, without any legal controversies attached to it!
