Celine Dion’s Incurable Stiff Person Syndrome Has Left Her Without Control Over Her Muscles
Celine Dion is a world-renowned icon. It was sad news when she had to cancel her worldwide tour in early 2022 because she had been battling Stiff Person Syndrome.
An update about the legendary Canadian singer’s health is not looking positive either, as the celebrated performer has now lost control over her muscles.
Celine’s older sister, Claudette, recently spoke with 7 Jours, a French-Canadian outlet. She said, “She’s working hard, but she doesn’t have control over her muscles. What breaks my heart is that she’s always been disciplined. She’s always worked hard.”
Claudette continued, “It’s true that in both our dreams and hers, the goal is to return to the stage. In what capacity? I don’t know.”
“The vocal cords are muscles, and the heart is also a muscle. This is what comes to get me. Because it’s one out of a million cases, the scientists haven’t done much research because it didn’t affect that many people.”
Recall that the My Heart Will Go On singer shared her diagnosis in January 2022. Claudette has reason to believe that it may take a while for the 55-year-old singer to return on stage because of her current battle with the condition.
Stiff Person Syndrome is considered to be incurable right now and is progressive. It causes the body to target and attack its nerve cells, thus leading to significantly impaired mobility.
Claudette also took the time to thank the people who have continuously supported her sister. “Some people have lost hope because it’s an illness that isn’t well known. If only you knew how many phone calls the Foundation gets about Celine! People tell us they love her, and they’re praying for her. She gets so many messages, presents, and blessed crucifixes.”
Fondation Maman Dion, Celine’s family charity, has received these messages from the star.
Claudette has been the one providing updates about Celine’s health. She revealed that they were already working with the top researchers in that field of study, but unfortunately, Celine has had little improvement despite this.
During her chat with Le Journel de Montreal, Claudette said, “We can’t find any medicine that works, but having hope is important.” Back in October, Claudette’s update was that Celine was not yet 100% dependent on a wheelchair to get around and that she was still planning to return to performing and to her fans.
Celine first shared her diagnosis in late 2022, with an emotional Instagram post in December. She then canceled her world tour, which was scheduled for 2023 and 2024.
Then, in September, a YouTube video of a wheelchair-bound Celine circulated. Part of the video’s narration included how the Grammy Award-winning singer was dying because of how her illness was progressing quickly.
The clip upset a lot of Celine’s friends and followers, so her sister took up the task of denying what was presented in the video. She told showbizz.net, “I know that morally, mentally, she is strong. She is not depressed at all … she really has the joy of living. We will get through this.”
