Elton John Says He’s In “Awe” Of Chappell Roan

Elton John has nothing but love for rising star Chappell Roan, and he’s not shy about saying it.
The legendary musician, 77, recently revealed that he’s been a longtime fan of the HOT TO GO! singer and even FaceTimes her regularly to check in. “I first heard of ‘Pink Pony Club’ and I played it on my [Apple Music show] ‘Rocket Hour’ about three years ago. Then I started to FaceTime her personally and just fell in love with her,” he shared in an interview with Them published on March 5.
Elton is completely in awe of Chappell, 27, admiring her boldness and honesty. In his words: “I loved who she was, what she talked about, how brave she was, her story. I love her bravery and the fact she’s not scared to speak out and she won’t do something if she doesn’t want to.” He’s also made it clear that she can always count on him for guidance. “I have to say, when I’m FaceTiming her, I’m a bit in awe of her because I think she’s so great. And I’m just there to say, ‘Listen, if anything happens and you’re not sure about it, just FaceTime me or email me.’ I’m just there for her,” he shared.
Their friendship isn’t just over the phone. On March 2, the two performed together at the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s Academy Awards viewing party. Elton later posted about the night on Instagram, celebrating their duet of Pink Pony Club and his classic Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me. “I officially joined the Pink Pony Club last night, courtesy of the one and only @chappellroan!” he wrote. The event also raised over $8.6 million for HIV/AIDS support, which Elton described as “life-changing.”
Elton is currently promoting his latest album, Who Believes in Angels?, which he co-wrote with singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile. Brandi, 43, explained in the interview that their new single, Swing for the Fences, is a powerful message of support for the LGBTQ+ community. “[From] me and Elton and different generations, coming from different countries, and still saying that the sky’s the limit for you. You can go all the way because we’re behind you, and there are generations of queer people behind you,” she stated.
Elton echoed that sentiment, praising the determination of younger generations. “The great thing about young people is their spirit and their desire to be heard and to not take no for an answer.”
