Lizzo Says People Have Been “Distracted” By Her Looks

Lizzo is getting real about how people see her and she’s making it clear that they don’t really know her. In a candid interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, the singer and rapper, whose real name is Melissa Jefferson, reflected on the misconceptions that have followed her throughout her career.
“You know what I realized? Nobody really knows me. If it’s easy for you to think just anything about me, then you don’t really know me,” Lizzo, 36, shared. She believes people have been “distracted” by her looks and the joy she radiates. “I think that they don’t understand it. Where I thought people got me, they really didn’t.”
Lizzo also shared that she has changed over time and is proud of who she has become. “I am the best version of Melissa ‘Lizzo’ Jefferson right now. Not because of anything external or superficial, but because of the work that I’ve done on myself as a human being and the life that I’ve lived,” she said. “I’m really proud of this version of myself. I cannot wait to just show her to the world and for people to get to know me for real this time.”
On March 13, Lizzo dropped her latest single, Still Bad, accompanied by a spooky music video. In the eerie visuals, she dances with zombies, gets drenched in what looks like blood, and wanders through an enchanted forest in a red latex outfit while haunted creatures follow her. Just like in her Love in Real Life video, she eventually embraces the spooky characters and dances with them.
Earlier this month, Lizzo also surprised fans with her weight loss transformation. During a Twitch livestream, she proudly showed off her slimmer figure while rocking a black top, light-colored jeans, and a silver cross pendant necklace — along with shapewear from her brand, Yitty. In response to a compliment from a viewer, she playfully turned to showcase her outfit, adjusted her jeans’ waistline, and danced for the camera.
Last month, she posted a mirror selfie on Instagram, calling her transformation a “weight release.” She posed in a black bra and matching underwear, paired with gold hoop earrings and light makeup, embracing her new look with confidence.
