Stevie Nicks Reveals How a Moment of Doubt Became “Landslide”
Stevie Nicks reflected on the uncertain chapter of her life that inspired “Landslide” while appearing at City of Hope’s Spirit of Life Gala on October 27. Introducing the song, the 78-year-old singer recalled writing it in Aspen, Colorado, as she questioned the future of her relationship and musical partnership with Lindsey Buckingham.
Nicks described sitting alone in a mountain home overlooking snow-covered hills while her companions went out to dinner. Struggling financially at the time, she found the setting inspiring and decided to write something special. With the Goya guitar she had brought along, she began creating what would become one of her best-known songs.
The doubts followed the disappointing commercial performance of the duo’s 1973 album, Buckingham Nicks, and the loss of their record deal. Nicks worked various jobs while continuing to pursue music, and Buckingham had an opportunity to tour with the Everly Brothers. After connecting with Mick Fleetwood in 1974, they joined Fleetwood Mac, which released “Landslide” in 1975. Their romance ended the following year during the making of Rumours, but their musical collaboration continued.
Decades later, the pair have spoken about reconnecting. Buckingham told E! News in August 2026 that they were talking regularly, crediting a Fleetwood Mac documentary with helping resolve past tensions. Nicks has likewise reflected on their complicated bond, describing it on the Song Exploder podcast as a relationship filled with both difficult periods and remarkable moments.
