Solange’s Minimalist Downtown Hollywood Haven Of 17 Years Featured In Glossy Architectural Magazine’s Cover
Spreading across issue #30 of the Apartmento magazine is the downtown Hollywood apartment Solange Knowles, Beyoncé’s sister, has lived in since age 19.
The songstress moved into the apartment with her son, Daniel Julez J Smith, while he was a toddler, and to date, she has maintained ownership of the apartment and still lives there. But, over the years, a lot has evolved concerning the apartment’s look. It has gone through various redesigned arrangements to get to its current wavy pattern.
Now, the home is filled with commissioned art pieces from black artists and an array of furniture she designed herself. Over the years, the singer-songwriter has described the bathtub of her Los Angeles home as her safe haven and where she does most of her songwriting.
Explaining her reason for going after the home at 19 years old, she tells Apartmento, “As my career as a songwriter grew, I wanted to find a place where we could have a bit more grounding, a home life there with more stable roots..”
“I was a single mother and was looking for a building with a sense of safety when I found this loft space in Hollywood,” she continued.
She tells the outlet that what drew her to the loft was its “20s art deco architecture, its exterior, and all of its original moldings and details.” She also said she was attracted to the “really good light,” while adding that “Hollywood was a very different place then.”
“In the beginning, I remember having this big loft with just a mattress, a bed in my son’s room, and the most basic furniture that you could have. Over time I slowly started personalizing it, making it mine,” she told the publication.
At some point, the Grammy-winning singer had to live in New York for work while her mom, Tina Knowles, moved in for a while to renovate her home. She notes that within the six months her mom spent in her home, “she totally Tina-fied it and painted all of the walls and put in curtains and added a bedroom.”
In addition to designing some of the furniture that now sits in her abode, the 36-year-old shared with the magazine that she has also started collecting “lifelong objects” which she says would become a part of her life and remain with her. The plan, she said, is to bring to life her vision of “how objects could evolve with me over the next 40, 50 years.”
Over time, the R&B/Soul singer has rearranged the space until it’s gotten to its current look. At some point, she had the sofa facing the window so that guests would look to the light, then she rearranged the sofas in a circular form, which she describes as “a really intense social experiment.” Now, the sofas sit in a wavy-like arrangement, which she believes “felt really right.”
