Coldplay Won’t Scrap Kiss Cam After Boston “Debacle”
Coldplay isn’t ditching the Jumbotron anytime soon, even after a viral kiss cam scandal made international headlines.
When the band brought its Music of the Spheres World Tour to Craven Park in Kingston upon Hull on August 18, frontman Chris Martin addressed the now infamous moment from their Boston show in July, when former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR executive Kristin Cabot were caught on camera looking less than thrilled.
On stage, Chris told the crowd, “We are so happy to be here. Many of you have written signs. So, I’ll take some time to try and read some signs. Then we’ll see what happens.” Spotting one fan’s note that they’d seen the band “three times in three months,” he teased, “You were at that Boston gig. Well, okay, thank you for coming again after that debacle.”
He went on, “We’ve been doing [the Jumbotron] a long time and it is only recently that it became a… yeah. Life throws you lemons and you’ve got to make lemonade. So, we are going to keep doing it because we are going to meet some of you.”
At the Boston concert, Andy and Kristin tried to duck away from the camera, which only fueled Chris’s playful commentary at the time: “Oh, look at these two! All right, c’mon, you’re okay… Oh, what? Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.” The TikTok of the moment quickly exploded online, and soon after, both resigned from their company roles.
The incident even inspired Oasis legend Liam Gallagher to poke fun at the idea of filming couples during shows. At his Manchester concert on July 20, he quipped, “Do we have any lovebirds in the house? Don’t worry, we ain’t got any of that Coldplay, snidey f—ing camera s—. It doesn’t matter to us who you’re mingling with, tingling with or fingering with. None of our f—ing business.”
Despite the drama, Coldplay is moving forward, with another Hull show on August 19 before a run of huge concerts at London’s Wembley Stadium. And yes, fans can still expect to see themselves up on the big screen.
