Mortal Kombat II Cracks the $100 Million Shield
According to official studio tracking reports finalized this morning, the R-rated video game adaptation has successfully crossed the $101.2 million milestone worldwide in its second weekend. The film, which features Karl Urban stepping into the boots of the arrogant, martial arts superstar Johnny Cage, has drawn an intensely loyal, heavily male demographic (accounting for 75% of early ticket sales) to premium format and IMAX screens across the globe.
While the film experienced a steep 65% domestic drop in its second weekend—bringing its North American cume to $62.2 million—it managed to register the biggest second weekend ever for a fighting game adaptation. Concurrently, its international rollout across 78 markets added another $39 million to the tournament pool. This global combination officially pushes the film past its $80 million production budget, putting it on a clear track toward profitability.
Directed by Simon McQuoid, Mortal Kombat II relies heavily on visceral, practical choreography and heavy fan service, including the introduction of beloved characters like Kitana (Adeline Rudolph) and Jade (Tati Gabrielle). Critics have praised its uninhibited embrace of the source material’s signature brutality, with IGN rewarding it an 8/10 for “clearing the bar and twirling it like a bo staff.”
Even though it has faced fierce counter-programming from Miranda Priestly and the ongoing theatrical run of the Michael biopic, the tournament is far from over. The film is currently tracking toward a lifetime global haul of $135 million to $150 million, which will comfortably crown it as the highest-grossing fighting game adaptation of all time. With Warner Bros. already confirming that a third installment is in early development, Earthrealm’s future on the big screen looks remarkably secure.
