Jennifer Lopez’s Triple Role In “Kiss Of The Spider Woman” Receives Rave Reviews At Sundance
Jennifer Lopez is sparking plenty of buzz after the world premiere of her new musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman, at the Sundance Film Festival. The musical, directed by Bill Condon, already has fans and critics alike excited, with many praising Jennifer for her role in the film. However, some are confused about how she’s already receiving Oscar buzz for a project that still doesn’t have a distributor or release date.
During an interview, Jennifer, who is no stranger to success in music and film, confessed she wasn’t ready to entertain any Oscar talk just yet. “Of course, I would love it to get the recognition that I believe it deserves,” she said.
She explained how reading the script for the first time had her laughing and crying, describing it as “what I’ve been waiting for my whole life.”
At the premiere on Sunday at Park City, Utah, Jennifer received a standing ovation at the Eccles Theatre. Social media quickly went wild, with fans calling for an Oscar campaign as one user wrote, “…start the 2026 Oscar campaign right now, because she’s undeniable!!” Another excited fan tweeted, “Great reviews coming out of Sundance for Kiss of the Spider Woman!!! So excited for this movie!!! Oscar winner JLo, perhaps??? Gaaaahd!”
Her performance isn’t just about the acting; it’s about the physical and musical challenges she took on for the film. Jennifer confirmed to People that her scenes were shot like old-school musicals, with some being filmed in one take. It was a little extra challenge, but exhilarating, according to Jennifer, who recalled how satisfying it was when the scenes turned out just right.
The musical is based on a 1976 novel and tells the story of two Argentinian prisoners who bond over a Hollywood musical. Jennifer plays a triple role, which includes the character of Ingrid. Her preparation for the role was intense, even with limited time.
“I would’ve liked to have had a whole year to do a big musical like this, but we didn’t have that — this independent film, and so everything was crunched,” she explained at a panel over the weekend.
Her co-star, Tonatiuh, had nothing but praise for Jennifer, saying it was “watching a mastery of work” and that even when he wasn’t part of a scene, he’d show up just to see her perform.
The movie also highlights themes of love and survival, with Jennifer saying it resonated deeply with her own life and experience as a mother. She added, “Love is just love, and people are just people,” emphasizing how connected she felt to her character.
The film has a star-studded production team, with Jennifer’s ex-husband Ben Affleck serving as one of the eight executive producers. Other producers include Matt Damon, Diego Luna, and Lopez herself.
